Janet Murran, born and raised in Ireland, graduated from Solent University, Southampton in the UK with a BA Hons Degree in Textile and Fashion design, after extensive travelling she returned to live and work in her native West Cork where she furthered her education by doing a BA Hons Degree in Visual Art from DIT Sherkin Island. Since then her work has been selected for several group exhibitions within Ireland.

The inspiring artist, Camille Souter who lives and works on Achill Island, Co. Mayo summed up for me why I feel that I can call myself an artist: she told me that it’s all about having passion for a subject which has to go through you in love, it has to make you want to paint it and there has to be a beauty.

Having spent many years travelling working on charter yachts, seeing amazing places, it wasn’t until I settled in West Cork that I felt I’d found an exceptional place, a spectacularly beautiful region of the country where the local landscape continues to be an important source of inspiration.  I use my immediate environment, the place where I have a personal connection, as a way in which to quietly convey themes of memory, place, seasonal changes and the natural cycle of life.  While people may not always be present in the work the impact that they have had is always visible; circular rubber tyre marks on the roads left behind by Boy Racers, the seasonal transformation of the land from farming, forestry, fishing, old derelict houses with a hidden beauty, Ilen River have all been exciting subjects to work from which is probably not surprising given that I was raised on a farm in rural South Cork and have a deep affection for the Irish countryside and it's people.

My work derives from sketchbook studies, photographic notes and written reflections. Sound, colour, smell, pattern, texture and use of extremes of light and darkness are all an important part of my practice where I mainly use a mix of drawing and painting to extricate hidden meanings within the subject matter. Working predominantly with charcoal on a painted background, building up tone and texture, then deconstructing by scratching, sanding, printing, placing marks or paint over the entire piece, reworking it until that something-magic happens in the relationship of artist, subject matter and medium.
