190th RHA Annual exhibition

The Ilen River runs through Skibbereen in West Cork and in this painting called ‘A Liminal Place, 2020’ which was selected for the 190th RHA Annual exhibition, I am responding to the ethereal beauty of this tidal river. The other-worldliness of the place is captured in the immaculate reflection of the land and sky in the deep, silent, slow moving water. We also get a glimpse of the riverbed, the solid ground beneath the flowing current, creating a sense of mystery in a place that may seem inexplicably familiar, using the rural landscape as a way in which to convey themes of memory, place, seasonal change, the natural cycle of life and the fragile yet powerful force that nature is.

A Liminal Place, 2020. Charcoal and acrylic on wood panel. H48 x W36cm.
